On 29 March, VFW Post 605 joined together with American Legion BE 01 to honor the service and sacrifice of our Vietnam War veterans.
Held on a date that signified the anniversary of the withdrawal of combat and support units from South Vietnam in 1973, the ceremony at Chievres Air Base in Belgium commemorated the sacrifices of the 10 local Vietnam veterans and their families as part of a national effort to recognize the men and women who were denied a proper welcome upon returning home more than 50 years ago.

Paying homage and tribute to these veterans, Post 605 Commander, Tim Povich, spoke about their sacrifices and thanked them for their service. Many of the Veterans shared stories about their time during the war and their experiences afterwards, as well as the reconciliation that occurred between Vietnam and the United States in recent years. He also thanked ceremony organizer BE01 Commander (and Post 605 Member) Joe Schram and the AAFES Base Exchange for hosting the event.
The U.S. will continue observing National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29 annually, as established by the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017. While the formal Department of Defense Commemorative Partner Program ends on Veterans Day 2025, the day remains codified in law, ensuring ongoing recognition.
The VFW stands firm in our commitment to ensuring that every Vietnam veteran knows their service was honorable, their sacrifices were not in vain, and that they are forever respected and remembered.
